I didn’t anticipate how far this story would travel – Mar 19 2026

Here’s what happened after we published the article.

Dear Friend,

I’m Chabeli Carrazana, economy and child care reporter at The 19th. For the past few months, I’ve been covering the impact of ICE on children and caregivers, particularly in Minnesota.

One of the people I spoke to was Bri, a mother organizing a donation network in Minneapolis. She donated her own breastmilk to a baby whose mother was detained by ICE, and has supplied groceries and diapers to more than 500 families harmed by ICE deportations and violence. I wanted to shine a light on how mothers like Bri are keeping each other afloat in the wake of heartbreaking events in Minnesota, but I didn’t anticipate how far her story would travel.

After we published the article, Bri’s GoFundMe for supplies grew exponentially— from $2,000 to $220,000 in less than a month. I’m deeply grateful to readers like you, who have responded and helped tangibly support the communities we cover.

While I have you, I wanted to share two other very 19th stories from the past month:

You can show your support for our team by making a donation of $19 or any amount today. Your gift directly funds our journalism.

Thanks as always for your support. None of this work would be possible without you.
