Welcome to In Short! I’m Matt Yan, and I’ll be dropping by your inbox Mondays-Thursdays to share everything you need to know to get through your day — and some fun things you probably don’t. Expect a rundown on the day’s news, plus recommendations from other parts of The Times like Games, Cooking, The Athletic and maybe-you-missed-it stories.

Good morning! When my best friend asks me to take photos of her, I usually need a little bit of coaching. She tells me exactly where to stand and how to hold my phone. And I guess I’m not the only guy who needs some help. On social media, women have been sharing the not-so-cute shots that their partners have taken of them. — Matt Yan

Liza Minnelli is 80 today. Happy birthday to her. To celebrate, my colleagues examined the visual signifiers that add up to an icon. Plus, not many people can call Judy Garland “Mama.” Here’s what makes Liza, well, Liza.

Here’s what you need to know

  • War in the Middle East: Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said the country would continue to block the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil route. The International Energy Agency warned that the war was causing “the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.” And a preliminary investigation found that the United States was responsible for a deadly strike that hit an Iranian elementary school.
  • Tariffs: The Trump administration said it could take as many as 4.4 million hours to manually process all tariff refund requests. The government must update a federal court today on its timeline for returning roughly $166 billion in illegal duties.
  • Immigration: A federal immigration agent fatally shot Ruben Ray Martinez, 23, in Texas last year. Officials said Martinez had intentionally run over an officer, which his friend and family denied. Newly released video leaves the truth murky.
  • Midterms: President Trump has set out on a multistate tour intended to show midterm election voters that he is focused on the economy and their hardships, but the president is also demonstrating that he still has control over the Republican Party.
  • Noma: René Redzepi stepped down from Noma, the restaurant he co-founded in 2003 and led to international acclaim, after recent reports in The New York Times and on social media citing accusations of abuse of employees in the 2000s and 2010s.

On a lighter note …

Two things you didn’t really need to know but now do:

  • Only queens can breathe underwater. Bumblebee queens, that is. A study published this week found that queen bumblebees have the ability to breathe even as they are fully submerged. As a former competitive swimmer, I’m jealous.
  • Have you heard? Donna Kelce is renovating her home. TMZ dramatically announced that Kelce, the mother of the football players Travis and Jason Kelce, planned to do some work on her house, and the news quickly became a meme.
